A one-time price is only possible if nothing recurs

Most dictation apps cannot sell you a licence outright, and it is not stinginess. If the app sends your audio to a server to be transcribed, somebody pays for that server every single time you speak. That cost arrives every month for as long as you keep talking, so the bill has to arrive every month too. A one-time price against a recurring cost is a business that loses money on its best customers.

Dictro runs the speech model on your own machine. Recognition and cleanup happen on your Mac or your PC, using your hardware and your electricity. There is no per-word cost on our side to recover, which is what makes a single payment a coherent offer rather than a gamble.

Do the sum before you decide

$99 once is about 20 months of monthly

At $5 a month, the $99 licence costs roughly what 20 months of subscribing costs. That is the break-even point, and it is the only number that matters here. Past it you are ahead, and the gap widens every month you keep using the app. Short of it you have overpaid for the privilege of not thinking about a renewal.

So the question is not really about money. It is a question about you: do you expect to still be dictating in two years? People who have already built the habit — who reach for the shortcut without deciding to — usually know the answer. People still trying it out usually do not, and should not pretend otherwise to save a hypothetical $60.

The honest part

Three reasons not to buy it

You do not dictate very much. The free plan is 10,000 words a week, permanently, with no card and no trial clock. That is around an hour of speaking every week, which covers daily email, chat and notes for most people. If you have never hit the cap, Pro is solving a problem you do not have — in any of its forms. What the free plan includes sets out exactly where it runs out.

You are not sure it will stick. Dictation is a habit, and habits fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the software. Monthly exists for precisely this: pay $5, find out, and stop if the answer is no. Buying a licence to avoid a $5 commitment is the more expensive way to be uncertain.

You expect to move on inside two years. New job, new workflow, a competitor you would rather use — all fine, and all reasons the break-even above never arrives. Annual billing at $48 saves you 20 percent without asking you to predict that far ahead.

If none of the three describe you, the licence is the cheaper choice and it removes a recurring decision from your life. That is the whole pitch, and it is deliberately not larger than it is.

No fine print worth hiding

What you actually own

It is a licence for the lifetime of the app. While Dictro exists and ships, the licence keeps working and there is no second charge. No honest software company can promise more than that, and the ones that phrase it as forever are describing the same thing in bolder words.

It belongs to your account, not your machine. A new laptop does not mean buying again — sign in and you are Pro. The same licence covers the Mac app and the Windows app together, rather than one each.

There is a renewal date, and it says never. That is the actual product: your account page shows no billing cycle, the billing portal has nothing to cancel, and no email arrives in eleven months asking you to reconsider.

The 14-day refund applies. If it turns out not to fit how you work, email within two weeks and you get the whole $99 back, no reason required. The full terms are on the refund policy page.
