The short version
Dictro is on-device by default. In On-device Mode, audio capture, speech recognition, and text refinement all run locally on your Mac's Apple Silicon — your voice, your audio, and your transcripts are never sent to us or to anyone else. If you choose to turn on Fast Mode, dictated content is processed by cloud providers, exactly as described below, and nowhere else.
On-device Mode (the default)
- Audio — captured only while you dictate, processed in memory on your Mac, never written to disk, never transmitted.
- Transcripts — typed into the app you're using, then discarded. If you turn on the optional transcript history (off by default), your most recent dictations are saved only on your Mac, are never uploaded, and can be deleted with one click.
- Models — the speech and language models are downloaded once and run entirely offline.
Fast Mode (optional, off by default)
Fast Mode is an opt-in feature that uses cloud services for faster transcription and text formatting. When — and only when — Fast Mode is switched on:
- Audio and/or transcript text may be sent over an encrypted connection to our infrastructure and to third-party processing providers, solely to produce your transcription or formatted text.
- Dictated content is processed transiently to return your result. We do not use it to train models, and we instruct our providers not to retain it beyond what is needed to process the request.
- You can switch back to On-device Mode at any time, and the on-device pipeline remains the default forever.
What we collect
- Account details — if you create an account: your email address, sign-in timestamps, and your plan.
- Usage counts — an aggregate word count per week, used solely to enforce plan limits. Counts are numbers only; never the words themselves.
- Billing details — if you buy a paid plan, payment is handled by our payment processor. We receive your plan, purchase status, and billing country — never your full card number.
What we never do
- We never receive your audio or dictated content unless you have explicitly enabled Fast Mode.
- We never store a history of what you dictate on our servers. The optional history feature is off by default and keeps transcripts only on your own Mac.
- We never train models on your data.
- We never sell or share personal data with advertisers.
Service providers
We use a small number of infrastructure providers to run Dictro: authentication and usage accounting, payment processing, and — for Fast Mode only — cloud transcription and formatting providers. Each receives only the data needed to perform its function, under agreements that restrict any other use.
Data retention and your rights
Account data is kept while your account is active. You can request a copy or deletion of your account data at any time by emailing help@dictro.com. Deleting your account removes all data we hold about you.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects how dictated content is handled, we will announce it in the app before the change takes effect.
